Jurgen Appell received his PhD degree from the Free University of Berlin, his habilitation degree from the University of Augsburg, Germany. He was a visiting professor for a longer stay in several countries, e.g., in the United States, in Russia, in Israel, and in Italy. In 1988 he obtained a tenure track position as professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Calabria, Italy, in 1989 he was appointed as a tenure track professor at the University of Wurzburg, Germany. 2019 he retired from that position. During his occupation in Italy and Germany, he had 10 PhD students. Jurgen Appell is the author of 6 books and about 150 original papers in international peer reviewed journals. He had, and continues to have, an active cooperation with colleagues from 25 countries.
