OPIS

Known as the Great Astronomer,1 Nicolaus Copernicus was also an outstanding researcher of economic life, i.e. an economist, the author of monetary treatises of a theoretical and practical nature. His knowledge made him an unrivalled authority on money. Unfortunately, his treatises devoted to an ever-present issue for over two thousand years, monetary debasement, despite containing original and timeless concepts which were far ahead of his time, were not published during his lifetime. They quickly fell into oblivion and remained unknown for three hundred years. For this reason, the credit due to him was unjustifiably attributed to other economic writers. Despite many attempts, mainly by Polish scholars, it has not yet been possible to convince economists around the world, including in Poland, to restore recognition for the authorship of his creations to the great astronomer.

Three monetary treatises and one letter on the subject emerged from his hand. An abridgement made in the sixteenth century by a Toruń copyist is also customarily attributed to him. It took Polish and German scholars almost two centuries to identify these and to establish their correct titles and dates. Despite this, knowledge of them is dramatically slim. Only one, the last treatise, is generally mentioned. To make matters worse, even many contemporary authors of economic works still use incorrect titles and dates. This state of affairs is incomprehensible to a Polish economist, especially since Copernicus is counted among the few Polish economists of world renown.

Mirosław Bochenek

Ukończył studia na Wydziale Ekonomiki Obrotu Akademii Ekonomicznej (obecnie Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny) w Krakowie w 1988 r. Tego samego roku został zatrudniony w Katedrze Ekonomii Akademii Rolniczej (obecnie Zachodniopomorski Uniwersytet Technologiczny) w Szczecinie. W latach 1990−1996 odbył miesięczny staż w Landwirtschaftskammer Schleswig-Holstein, sześciomiesięczny pobyt naukowy w Universität Wien oraz dziewięciomiesięczne studia na Universität Zürich. W 1998 r. na Wydziale Ekonomii Akademii Ekonomicznej w Krakowie obronił z wyróżnieniem pracę doktorską. W 1999 r. rozpoczął pracę w Katedrze Ekonomii na Wydziale Nauk Ekonomicznych i Zarządzania Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu. W 2009 r. uzyskał stopień naukowy doktora habilitowanego na WNEiZ UMK w Toruniu. W 2012 r. awansował na stanowisko profesora nadzwyczajnego UMK, a w 2022 r. otrzymał nominację profesorską z rąk prezydenta RP. Obszarami jego zainteresowań naukowych są: teoria ekonomii, historia myśli ekonomicznej oraz ekonomia nierynkowa. Wyniki prowadzonych badań prezentował podczas 65 konferencji naukowych oraz zamieścił w swoich publikacjach. Bibliografia jego prac obejmuje 134 pozycje, w tym 13 książek własnych, tj. Problem racjonalności w polskiej myśli ekonomicznej (1999), Szkice o ekonomii i ekonomistach (2004), Prekursorzy ekonomii matematycznej w Polsce (2008), Władysław Marian Zawadzki i jego dzieło (2009), Studia varia o ekonomii i ekonomistach (2010), Historia rozwoju ekonomii (6 tomów, 2016) oraz Istota i miejsce kategorii wartości w teorii ekonomii – ewolucja poglądów (2021). Jest aktywnym członkiem krajowych towarzystw naukowych. Od 1988 r. należy do Polskiego Towarzystwa Ekonomicznego (od 2021 r. pełni funkcję wiceprzewodniczącego Rady Naukowej), a od 2001 r. – do Towarzystwa Naukowego w Toruniu (od 2018 r. wiceprezes). Został odznaczony Srebrnym Krzyżem Zasługi, Medalem Srebrnym za Długoletnią Służbę i Złotą Odznakę Honorową PTE oraz nagrodzony kilkoma nagrodami indywidualnymi i wyróżnieniami Rektora UMK.
