OPIS
Volume 4 of the Konserwacja: Nauka i Sztuka / Conservation: Science and Art series, titled The Artefact in the Light of Materials Studies: Conservation, Technology and Techniques, contains 11 articles. The publication is divided into two parts: Part I – Painting Conservation: Technology and Techniques and Part II – Conservation
of Historical Handicraft Items, Metal Items and Architecture: Conservation Materials and Methods.
The articles in part one present the results of research projects focusing on mural paintings and theatrical sceneries. Moreover, they explore the use of new methods and materials for the removal of oil overpaint layers in easel paintings. Further contributions outline the results of an experimental study on the use of traditional and modern materials in the conservation and restoration of applied tin-relief brocades found in medieval paintings and sculptures, as well as the findings from a practical reconstruction and evaluation of modern-day applicability of selected painting grounds described in Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne’s manuscript, written in 1620–1646.
Part two deals with a variety of subjects, including the conservation of lacquerware and the use of the Japanese method known as kintsugi – both in its traditional version and with modern modifications. In addition, it discusses the issues involved in the conservation and restoration of vintage motorcycles and presents the results of a study of materials used in the conservation of historical facades and paintings on copper, as well as an analysis of old and modern gilding techniques used in the conservation of stone artefacts.
The monograph covers a variety of subjects related to the study of materials used in the creation and conservation of historical artefacts, as well as other issues that expand the existing knowledge regarding the conservation of works of art created using different techniques. All articles describe the results of art conservation studies conducted at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
