Książka ukazuje miejsce Mikołaja Kopernika w kulturze pamięci najpierw społeczności lokalnych Torunia i Fromborka, następnie środowiska erudytów Rzeczypospolitej, a wreszcie kręgu europejskich encyklopedystów. Autorzy stawiają ważne pytania: kim był Kopernik dla ludzi XVIII stulecia?, co decydowało o pamięci i zapomnieniu? Najprościej można by odpowiedzieć, że wybitny astronom był taki, jakim chcieli go widzieć i jakiego potrzebowali twórcy jego biogramów, fundatorzy tablic pamiątkowych i portretów oraz autorzy wierszy pochwalnych. I tu zaczynają się problemy z ustaleniem jednego przekazu, co potwierdza tezę Epikteta, że nie czyny poruszają ludzi, ale słowa o tych czynach, a słowa o Koperniku w XVIII w. stają się już nie tyle przedmiotem debaty naukowej, ile argumentem w rozmowach na tematy wyznaniowe i filozoficzne, w dyskusjach o wielości światów oraz postępie i oświeceniu ludzkości. Po pierwszym rozbiorze Rzeczypospolitej postać Kopernika nabiera nowych cech. Nie jest on już wyłącznie matematykiem, astronomem, kanonikiem, staje się bohaterem z panteonu narodowego, przywoływanym nie tylko dla pokrzepienia serc, lecz także dla pokrzepienia umysłu.

This book presents the place of Nicolaus Copernicus in the memorial culture of, firstly, local communities in Toruń and Frombork, secondly, among the erudite community of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and finally, in the circle of European encyclopedists. The authors ask important questions: who was Copernicus for the people of the 18th century, and which aspects determined memory and oblivion? The simplest answer could be that the outstanding astronomer was what the creators of his biographies, the founders of commemorative plaques and portraits, and the authors of his praise poems wanted and needed to see him. And here the problems begin with establishing a single narrative, which confirms Epictetus' thesis that it is not actions that move people, but words about these actions, and words about Copernicus in the 18th century become not so much the subject of a scientific debate, but an argument in conversations about religious and philosophical matters, in discussions about the multiplicity of worlds and the progress and enlightenment of humanity. After the first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the figure of Copernicus took on new features. He is no longer just a mathematician, an astronomer, or a canon; he becomes a hero from the national pantheon, invoked not only to comfort hearts, but also to keep up the strength of mind.
